It may be surprising to note that BlueDot, a Toronto based AI start-up, had alarmed its government clients and private sector on the December 31, 2019, about a cluster of unusual pneumonia happenings in the city of Wuhan, China, before the word came from the World Health Organization on the January 9, 2020.
BlueDot’s intervention is one application of Artificial Intelligence in COVID-19, in what we call early detection. AI in healthcare is undergoing strenuous research to become the backbone of the medical industry shortly.

One application of Artificial Intelligence in COVID-19 is seen in the diagnosis of infected patients. For instance, Alibaba’s AI-powered diagnosis system promises to detect the virus in an individual, through CT scans, within just twenty seconds with an accuracy rate of 96%. The catch, this innovation of AI in healthcare, is forty-five times faster than human detection.

With the doctors working around the clock and they being fatigued and infected in the process, AI extends a helping hand.AI lifts the weight off their shoulders by assisting in early diagnosis and offering treatments at an early stage via decision science and digital approaches.
With a multitude of people, contact tracing is an arduous task. Dialoguing with infected patients to identify who they’ve been in contact with, and thereafter, encourage those who’ve been exposed, to quarantine, takes time and effort.
However, the application of Artificial Intelligence in COVID-19 helps to identify the clusters and hotspots, to effectively perform contact tracing and monitoring of individuals. Into the bargain, it also helps to predict the future course of the disease and its likely reappearance.
While the world is battling the deadliest of diseases, others with pre-existing medical conditions are being deprived of their due medical care. Under this context, provinces in China, such as Hubei and Guangdong have resorted to the usage of robots for the delivery of drug and food items to the patients in hospitals and quarantined families.
Additionally, the other application of Artificial Intelligence in COVID-19 is found in the facilitation of clinical trials and the development of drugs at a much faster rate.
Presently, many researchers are delving into research and are making artificial intelligence a reality. As AI is finding great avenues for implementation in times of the COVID-19, it’s sure to get amplified in the future. This gives us an optimistic outlook on how AI is going to be the ideal interface between patients and doctors in the medical realm.
